Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency an online platform that includes videos and commentary on portrayals of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that analyzes how females are represented within popular culture's narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she works on issues related to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of the Internet environment. Holding a master's degree in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Sarkeesian was fascinated by gender issues and feminism since a young age. As of 2009, as she was still studying at university, Sarkeesian launched the site Feminist Frequency. The site was about to launch a series of videos on the web that looked at gender representations in video games and was the target of online harassment. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced her resolve as feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist has been acknowledged by many awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and founded Feminist Frequency, an non-profit educational organization that studies women's representations in pop culture.
