Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was born to a mother of both black and white parents. She grew up on her mother's side. She said that the color of her skin was the primary reason for her feeling disregarded by her peers as a child. [3] Her parents struggled financiallyand were always on the move, uprooting their homes sixteen times in order to pursue her father's career. Russell was candid about how despite this, Russell said that she was always a creative person from the age of a child. She wanted to become a dancer, and later to be an artist. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class, and eventually found her niche. She used the money she earned from work to buy an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. Once her savings ran out she would go back to work until she earned enough income to audition again. That routine went on for four years before she landed her first major television role.
