Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine who is a lab technician as well as John Ormond. She is the second of five children for her parents. She was educated in private schools, at first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early leading performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady started to attract attention. After one year at art school she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she completed in 1988. Ormond made her first appearance on British television's 1989 serial Traffik. It revolved around illicit heroin trade between the Far East as well as the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin dependent daughter of the lead character the Home Office minister working to fight heroin imports. This was Ormond's first role and received glowing reviews.
